The EU AI Act, which is binding on all member states, introduces a structured approach to AI regulation by categorizing systems into four risk levels:
Prohibited AI systems: Unacceptable risks, such as subliminal manipulation or exploiting vulnerabilities based on age, disability, or socio-economic status.
High-risk AI systems: Subject to strict compliance, including risk mitigation strategies, high-quality data standards, and human oversight.
Limited risk AI systems: Subject to lighter transparency obligations, ensuring users are informed when interacting with AI.
Minimal risk AI systems: Largely unregulated, covering many of the AI applications available on the EU market today.
